Anti-creationists can no longer ignore the lack of proved missing-link transitional fossils, and exposed to ridicule, they continue the desperate search to find an authentic transitional form, halfway between different species. The observable scientific evidence from the fossil record shows the sudden appearance of species in the Cambrian layers and an absence of significant change within the species.

This creates a major problem for evolutionists. How can they believe in change when the fossils prove life forms have not changed? Uncomfortably for them, the evidence fits the Genesis creation account and the impact of the global flood.

Punctuated Equilibrium

However, rather than abandon their faith evolutionists now suggest that instead of evolving slowly over millions of years, evolution must have occurred quickly, in giant leaps. Previously they believed more fossils would be found that would prove their theory. Now they believe that long periods of unchanged stasis is punctured with bursts of rapid evolution. This theory is called punctuated equilibrium. This is an old theory given a new coat of paint and resurrected with a flashy name. The evidence for punctuated equilibrium is ... wait for it ... a lack of fossil evidence for missing link transitional forms ... i.e. make their preconceived ideas fit the data. This theory claims that evolution happened in quick bursts of multiple mutations and leaves no fossil record. Incidentally, Darwin discounted such propositions as being evidence of the miraculous, an act of God!

In presenting this theory, anti-creationists are acknowledging that the fossil record fails to show the progressive changes of one organism into a new, higher organism, and, that biological gradualism over extended time periods is disproved. They accept that all life appears suddenly in the fossil record and is not preceded by ancestor evidence.

This is of fundamental importance. Rather than using existing evidence from the fossil record and drawing logical conclusions that can be defended by the observable data, anti-creationists start from the premise that evolution must be true, and then they take whatever steps are necessary to bridge the gap between the observable scientific evidence and their theory. This is unscientific. The data should inform your theory; you must never use a theory to invent data that isn’t present. Such a make-believe approach would clearly be biased. Nevertheless, they have invented this ‘special explanation’ of how evolution could occur without leaving behind any fossil evidence. This is rather like saying the very evidence of you committing a crime, was that you were never present at the crime scene!

Hopeful Monsters

The great misunderstanding over this, is the failure to grasp the significance of rapid change from one organism into another. At some point, for example, a fish laid an egg, and a frog hatched out; a beaver hatched from a lizard egg and a crocodile laid an egg from which a bird hatched! Perhaps they believe if you kiss a frog it will turn into a prince?

Not surprisingly, this fairy tale science has been labelled the “hopeful monster theory”. It is nothing more than a smoke screen to hide the cracks in the crumbling sandcastle of evolution.
